Quitandinha Palace
Approaching Petrópolis from Rio, Quitandinha is a natural introduction to the city. Its scale, architecture and mountain setting reveal a very different chapter of Petrópolis from the imperial landmarks that follow.
Imperial Museum
The former summer residence of Emperor Pedro II is the historical center of the suggested day.
Its rooms, objects and collections provide a direct introduction to Brazil’s imperial period and to the role Petrópolis played during the Second Reign.
The museum currently receives visitors from Tuesday to Sunday, so opening days matter when we shape the route.
Cathedral of Saint Peter of Alcantara
The cathedral brings together architecture, religious history and the memory of Brazil’s imperial family. It also sits naturally within a walk through the Historic Center rather than feeling like an isolated stop.
Casa de Petrópolis — House of Seven Errors
Known locally as the Casa dos Sete Erros, the house belongs firmly within the historical and architectural story of Petrópolis.
The nickname comes from a long-standing game of spotting deliberate asymmetries in its façade — not from actual construction mistakes.
Its interior is currently closed, so the visit focuses on the exterior, garden and the architecture of the house itself.
The Historic Center is not simply another item to tick off between these places. It is the setting that ties much of the suggested route together.

The suggested route works well as it is. But Petrópolis also gives us several very different directions in which to take the day.
What you choose changes more than the list of stops — it can change the character of the experience.
Imperial history & architecture
Stay close to the suggested route and go deeper into the Petrópolis most closely associated with Brazil’s imperial period.
The Imperial Museum, Cathedral, Quitandinha Palace, House of Seven Errors and Historic Center form the backbone of this version of the day.
This is the natural starting point if understanding why Petrópolis developed as it did — and why it became so closely associated with the Brazilian monarchy — matters more to you than fitting in as many separate attractions as possible.
Brazilian lives & culture
Another way to understand Petrópolis is through the people who lived there.
The House of Santos Dumont introduces one of Brazil’s most important historical figures through the unusual home he designed for himself.
The Stefan Zweig House opens another chapter entirely: the Austrian writer, exile and author who spent the final period of his life in Petrópolis.
The Stefan Zweig House is generally open from Friday to Sunday, so it is an option we plan around your date rather than treating as an everyday stop.
German heritage & beer
Petrópolis also carries an important German cultural inheritance.
The House of the German Settler offers a small-scale look at the lives of the immigrants who helped shape the city, while the Bohemia brewery tour explores a different part of that heritage through Petrópolis’ brewing tradition.
These can replace part of the imperial route when that side of the city interests you more.
Beyond central Petrópolis
Some possibilities take the day outside the compact geography of the Historic Center.
Vale do Amor is one example. Itaipava may be another, depending on what you want from the day.
Including one of these is not simply a matter of adding another stop.
It changes the geography of the experience — and therefore how much time remains for museums, historic houses and the center of Petrópolis.
That trade-off is something we discuss before building the route.
Not everything has to fit
Personalization is not about squeezing every possible attraction into eight hours.
It is about deciding what deserves those eight hours.
Adding Santos Dumont, Stefan Zweig, the Bohemia brewery tour or Vale do Amor may mean removing another stop, shortening a visit or changing the order of the day.
That is part of the planning.

Starting in Rio — or already in Petrópolis?

Planning Petrópolis around opening days
Opening days matter more in Petrópolis than they do on many sightseeing days in Rio.
The Imperial Museum, for example, currently receives visitors from Tuesday through Sunday. Other smaller museums and historic houses can have their own schedules, while places such as the Stefan Zweig House have more limited availability.
That does not mean Petrópolis cannot be experienced on a Monday.
It means it becomes a different kind of day.
When major interiors are closed, we can place more emphasis on the Historic Center, architecture, exteriors, gardens where accessible, other available stops and the overall story of the city.
We check the practical possibilities for your date rather than presenting the same itinerary regardless of what is actually open.

What’s usually included
The standard private setup normally includes:
- a private vehicle with a professional driver;
- a licensed tour guide in the language arranged for your group;
- pick-up and drop-off at agreed locations in Rio de Janeiro or Petrópolis;
- complimentary bottled water;
- admission to paid attractions that form part of the agreed route, where applicable.
If you replace or add attractions — such as the Bohemia brewery tour or another paid visit — the proposal is adjusted accordingly.

Lunch
Time for lunch is built into the eight-hour day.
The meal and drinks are not included and are paid directly at the restaurant.
There is no single restaurant that needs to be built into every Petrópolis itinerary. Where we stop can depend on the route, your preferences and how you want to use the day.
